How Heat Pumps Work for North Carolina Homes

If you’re considering an upgrade to your home’s heating and cooling system, a heat pump might be the perfect fit. Combining heating and cooling in one system, heat pumps are redefining how homeowners maintain comfort in every season.

At Trademasters Heating & Cooling, we’ve seen firsthand how heat pumps are transforming homes across North Carolina. In this guide, we’ll break down how heat pumps work, their benefits, and what makes them a great choice for your home.

What Makes Heat Pumps Different?

Unlike traditional heating systems that create heat through combustion or resistance, heat pumps move heat from one place to another.

How They Work in Winter:

Heat pumps extract warmth from the outside air, even on chilly days, and transfer it indoors to keep your home cozy.

How They Work in Summer:

When temperatures rise, heat pumps reverse the process, pulling heat out of your home to keep it cool and comfortable.

This approach makes them incredibly versatile and reliable for year-round comfort.

Which Heat Pump is Right for Your Home?

Several types of heat pumps are available, each designed to meet specific needs. Here’s a quick overview:

1. Air-Source Heat Pumps

  • Ideal For: Most homes in North Carolina.
  • How They Work: Pull heat from the air outside to heat or cool your home.
  • Why Choose Them: Easy to install and highly effective for moderate climates.

2. Ground-Source (Geothermal) Heat Pumps

  • Ideal For: Homeowners looking for a long-term investment.
  • How They Work: Use underground pipes to transfer heat to or from the earth.
  • Why Choose Them: Extremely dependable and a great fit for properties with sufficient yard space.

3. Mini-Split Heat Pumps

  • Ideal For: Homes without ductwork or rooms that need independent temperature control.
  • How They Work: Provide heating and cooling directly to specific areas.
  • Why Choose Them: Perfect for add-ons, garages, or older homes.

4. Hybrid Heat Pumps

  • Ideal For: Homes in areas with wide temperature fluctuations.
  • How They Work: Switch between a heat pump and a furnace depending on the weather.
  • Why Choose Them: Ensure consistent comfort, even during extreme cold.

What Sets Heat Pumps Apart?

heat pumps over several unique benefits that make them a great choice compared to traditional heating and cooling systems. They can provide both heating and cooling in one system, which saves space and simplifies your home’s setup. Instead of burning fuel or using electric resistance to generate heat, heat pumps transfer heat, which means you’ll likely spend less on energy bills.

Because heat pumps don’t use combustion, they produce fewer emissions, which helps improve indoor air quality and creates a healthier home environment. If you’re in North Caroline, you may also qualify for federal tax credits and local utility rebates, making it more affordable to install a heat pump.

These systems are designed to work reliably in all seasons, providing consistent comfort during North Carolina’s carrying weather. Plus, modern heat pumps can increase your home’s value, making them a smart investment for homeowners looking to upgrade their heating and cooling system.

Keeping Your Heat Pump in Top Shape

To ensure your heat pump runs smoothly year-round, regular care is key:

  • Seasonal Checkups: Schedule professional tune-ups every spring and fall.
  • Filter Changes: Replace filters monthly to maintain airflow and prevent buildup.
  • Clear Debris: Keep outdoor units free from leaves, dirt, and obstructions.
  • Inspect Ducts: Check for leaks or gaps in ductwork to avoid wasted airflow.
  • Monitor Performance: Watch for unusual sounds or reduced output.

Prevent Dry Air in Your Home This Winter

When the temperatures drop outside, staying cozy indoors often means turning on your heating system. Unfortunately, winter’s cold air combined with the warmth of your heating system can sap moisture from the air, creating uncomfortable dryness throughout your home.

The good news? With the right strategies, including humidifiers and HVAC adjustments, you can prevent dry air from taking over this winter.

Here’s everything you need to know, brought to you by Trademasters Heating & Cooling.

How Does Winter Dry Air Affect Your Home and Health?

Why would you need to prevent dry air in winter? When the air is too dry inside your living space, it can create problems for your home and health, which may drastically impact your comfort.

Excessively dry air can:

  • Increase the risk of upper respiratory infections and sore throat
  • Exacerbate sinus congestion
  • Create static electricity inside your home
  • Cause a dry cough due to a drier-than-normal respiratory system
  • Dry out lips, eyes, and skin

What Are the Best Ways to Add Humidity to My Home?

The good news about dry air is that you can prevent it by:

  • Installing a humidifier to add moisture to your home’s air.
  • Boiling water on the stove without a lid and letting the water vapor fill the dry room.
  • Using indoor plants to increase humidity levels through their natural release of water vapor.

You could also invest in air sealing services to keep conditioned air from escaping your living spaces.

Can Your HVAC System Help Prevent Dry Air?

Your HVAC system can contribute to indoor dryness, but it can also be part of the solution.

  • By controlling how much outside air mixes with your heated indoor air, you can reduce dryness.
  • Setting your thermostat to around 67°F before bedtime can minimize the amount of moisture your system removes from the air.
  • Whole-home humidifiers integrate with your HVAC system to provide consistent moisture throughout your home.

Why Consider Installing a Whole-Home Humidifier for Winter?

The best way to use your HVAC to combat dry air is to use a humidifier. Certain models can attach to HVAC systems to deliver moisture throughout the building. A portable humidifier would be an option if only one room needed extra moisture.

If you do decide to invest in a whole-house humidifier, you must maintain it regularly along with your HVAC system. Tune-ups keep the system clean, stop airflow restrictions, and prevent damage.

How Much Can Ductwork Inspection and Sealing Save You?

Homeowners typically consider their HVAC system and insulation as essential for indoor comfort and energy efficiency, and they certainly are. However, you shouldn’t overlook the importance of duct inspection and sealing as a core part of an effective and energy-efficient system.

Trademasters Heating & Cooling takes a look at a question people love to ask: “How much can ductwork services really save me?”

Benefits and Long-Term Savings Provided by Ductwork Inspection and Sealing

North Carolina’s seasonal climate puts homeowners’ ductwork through a workout throughout the year. Trouble like loose connections, holes, and gaps in connections lead directly to energy waste. Although there is an upfront cost for ductwork sealing, the long-term benefits are tangible and important.

These are some of the most important duct sealing benefits:

Enhanced HVAC Efficiency and Ductwork Savings

Professional duct inspections and sealing provide an immediate HVAC efficiency boost. Leaky ductwork can allow up to 30% of conditioned air to escape into attics and crawlspaces before it ever reaches your living space.

That results in higher energy consumption as your HVAC system works harder to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Consider your long-term energy cost reduction when the air you pay to heat or cool is actually directed to where you need it.

Consistent Indoor Comfort

Ductwork sealing is a long-term home air leakage fix that also promotes even, consistent heating and cooling in every room throughout your home. Ductwork leaks not only lead to wasted energy but also cause inefficient circulation in undamaged areas inside your ductwork by affecting pressure and airflow everywhere.

Properly sealed ductwork helps eliminate hot and cold spots around your home, saving you from the expense of space heaters, fans, and the like to assist a struggling HVAC system.

Preventing Costly Repairs

How much can ductwork inspection and sealing save you? A lot, when you consider you’ll need fewer repairs. When conditioned air escapes through ductwork leaks, your HVAC system compensates by running longer and harder, increasing the risk of potential system breakdowns. Addressing leaks early on with professional sealing reduces the likelihood of much more costly repairs down the road, extending the useful lifespan of your HVAC system.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

Leaky ducts draw in dust, pollen, and other pollutants from attics and crawlspaces, spreading these allergens throughout your home. Professional sealing keeps these contaminants out —  reducing airborne dust and contaminants.

This duct sealing energy savings alone reduces the costs you would otherwise face to install additional filtration and purification systems to intercept the pollutants your ductwork would otherwise circulate through your living space.

The 2025 HVAC Refrigerant Change

Big changes are coming regarding new air conditioning units and heat pumps, as the 2025 HVAC refrigerant change prepares to roll out. However, it’s important to understand that these changes mainly impact the installation of new systems.

If your current system is in good working order, you won’t need to worry about upgrading right away. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about the upcoming refrigerant transition.

What’s Changing with HVAC Refrigerants?

Beginning January 1, 2025, all newly manufactured air conditioners and heat pumps will be required to use low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants, known as A2Ls. These refrigerants are designed to have a significantly lower environmental impact, contributing less to global warming compared to current refrigerants, like R-410A.

A2Ls are classified as mildly flammable, so manufacturers are updating equipment designs with additional safety features to account for this characteristic. While these refrigerants are more environmentally friendly, their flammability is a consideration for both manufacturers and installers moving forward.

Who Is Mandating the 2025 HVAC Refrigerant Change?

The change is part of the broader push for sustainability driven by the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020. This act authorizes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants like R-410A due to their high GWP.

The AIM Act aims to reduce the production and consumption of HFCs and transition the industry to greener alternatives.

Important Dates for the 2025 Refrigerant Change

Here’s a timeline for when these changes take effect:

  • January 1, 2025: All new residential and light commercial air conditioning units and heat pumps must be compatible with A2L refrigerants. These new units cannot accept older refrigerants.
  • January 1, 2026: Any AC or heat pump manufactured before 2025 using older refrigerants must be installed. After this date, only A2L-compatible units can be installed.
  • January 1, 2028:  Window air conditioners will need to comply with the refrigerant change by this deadline.

Importantly, any existing systems installed before 2025 are not subject to the new standards. They can continue using older refrigerants.

What Are the Benefits and Drawbacks of A2L Refrigerants?

The main advantage of switching to A2L refrigerants is their reduced impact on global warming, making them an eco-friendlier option for HVAC systems. As part of the industry’s shift to sustainability, A2Ls play a key role in reducing carbon emissions.

However, these eco-friendly refrigerants do have potential for flammability. Though it is a lower flammability designation, older refrigerants have a no flammability designation. Equipment manufacturers will add safety features to the new systems to minimize any fire risk.

On the upside, A2Ls have the same non-toxic classification as current refrigerants, so health risks remain minimal.

How Does the Refrigerant Phaseout Affect Homeowners?

For homeowners with systems installed before 2025, the refrigerant change does not require any immediate action. You can continue using your existing unit as normal, and refrigerants like R-410A will remain available for servicing older systems. The phaseout only affects the production and installation of new units.

If you’re planning to install a new air conditioner or heat pump in 2025 or beyond, you’ll need to purchase equipment that is compatible with the A2L refrigerant. While this may increase upfront costs due to the required safety enhancements, the long=term environmental benefits are substantial.

Is Your Thermostat Accurate? The Importance of Maintenance for Home Comfort

Have you ever wondered if your thermostat is telling the truth? It’s possible that its readings aren’t as spot-on as you think. Even the most cutting-edge devices go haywire without proper thermostat maintenance.

As the go-to HVAC experts in the Old North State, we know a thing or two about the little things that make a big difference in home comfort. Keep reading as we help you create the most consistent indoor temperatures with a little care and attention.

Familiarize Yourself With the Warning Signs

You don’t need special equipment or an advanced degree to sense when something’s off.

Watch out for:

  • Temperature fluctuations in different rooms
  • The HVAC system constantly cycling on and off
  • Higher-than-usual energy bills
  • Unresponsive thermostat controls
  • Unusual noises from the system
  • Error messages

Assess Your Thermostat Sensors

Confirm your suspicions by getting a calibrated thermometer. They’re fairly cheap, and you can often find them at your local hardware store.

Place the device several feet away from your thermostat at the same height and away from drafts or direct sunlight. Set the thermostat at a certain temperature, wait for about an hour, then compare their readings.

A difference of one or two degrees shouldn’t cause alarm. Bigger discrepancies, though, will cost you money and impact your home comfort.

Fixing Your Thermostat

Don’t replace the thermostat just yet! Grab your owner’s manual and perform a little thermostat maintenance.

Find the contacts, which look like small, fin-shaped metal pieces. Do they look clean, or are they covered in grime? Rub them with a soft cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

Check the screws holding the wires and tighten the ones that look loose. You should also replace the batteries when needed. Different setups require different forms of upkeep, so refer to your manual for more specific instructions.

The Rewards of Consistent Care

Many people make the mistake of only servicing their thermostat when there’s an obvious problem. Why wait for the potential headache when you can prevent it entirely? Regular maintenance can improve energy efficiency and keep you from experiencing any unexpected cold or hot spells.

Accurate temperature control also means:

  • Extended HVAC appliance lifespan
  • Reduced power or gas consumption
  • Comfortable living environments
  • Fewer unexpected repairs
  • Enhanced indoor air quality

Is it Time To Replace Your Device?

Thermostats typically last over a decade with proper care. If yours has reached the 10-year mark and exhibits frequent issues, you might want to upgrade sooner.

Newer models offer more precise temperature control, smart home integration, and energy-saving features that make a real difference. Some even come with learning capabilities; they adapt to your routine and adjust the temperature automatically for optimal comfort.

Summer HVAC Tune-Up Guide for Maximum Efficiency

Our air conditioning systems around coastal North Carolina get a serious workout during the summer months. In this summer HVAC tune-up guide, Trademasters Heating & Cooling shares the information you need about why regular maintenance is vital to your cooling system’s effectiveness and energy efficiency.

Why Are HVAC Tune-ups Important?

As summer temperatures rise, your air conditioning system works overtime to keep your home comfortable. Without preventive care, small issues can quickly become larger problems requiring costly emergency repairs or even complete system replacement.

A professionally maintained cooling system operates at peak efficiency and provides more reliable service when needed most.

Signs Your HVAC System Needs a Tune-Up

If you don’t remember your last HVAC tune-up service or if you experience any of these symptoms, it’s time for professional service:

  • Reduced airflow or uneven cooling
  • Unusual noises or odors
  • Higher energy bills
  • Thermostat malfunction
  • Frequent and unnecessary on/off cycling

What Does a Summer HVAC Tune-Up Include?

A comprehensive HVAC tune-up before the cooling season begins involves several key tasks that help ensure the efficiency and longevity of your system. Here’s what you can expect:

  • System inspection. A professional technician inspects electrical connections, fan motor and compressor systems, coils, and components to identify any issues early.
  • Cleaning and airflow improvement. Every HVAC relies on adequate airflow to operate correctly. A technician performs filter replacement and duct inspection, looking for any loss of airflow.
  • Refrigerant levels check. A technician will examine refrigerant systems for potential leaks and proper refrigerant levels.
  • Thermostat check and calibration. A technician checks your system’s thermostat for proper function and temperature control.

Self-Maintenance Tips To Boost Your HVAC Efficiency

Professional tune-ups are essential, and so is certain routine maintenance you should perform between service visits. No summer HVAC tune-up guide would be complete without these reminders:

  • Replace air filters regularly. During summer, check filters at least every 30 days and replace them when they appear dirty or clogged. In any event, change filters no less than every 90 days.
  • Clear debris around the outdoor unit. Keep excess vegetation, dirt, and debris away from your outdoor HVAC unit. It must have open and free airflow to work correctly.
  • Check thermostat settings. Work on keeping your thermostat set to an efficient temperature. Consider upgrading to a smart programmable thermostat for better control throughout the day and night and when away from home.

Can Regular Tune-Ups Extend the Lifespan of Your HVAC System?

Regular HVAC tune-ups are a wise investment in your system’s longevity. Our services address minor issues early and ensure your system runs efficiently. You’ll get the most service possible from your system while avoiding costly repairs and premature system replacement.

How To Recognize a Refrigerant Leak

The refrigerant flowing from the condenser to the evaporator coils is the secret sauce in your air conditioner’s heat transfer process – and it’s a secret because you’re not supposed to see the refrigerant in an air conditioning system in excellent shape.

Unfortunately, HVAC systems can spring leaks in their refrigerant lines which cause the refrigerant to seep out. Low refrigerant levels lead to a long list of potential issues if unaddressed. In this post, we’ll cover how to recognize a refrigerant leak.

Obvious Signs of a Refrigerant Leak

Some of the most common signs of a refrigerant leak include the following:

Inefficient Cooling

One of the clearest signs that you’re dealing with a refrigerant leak is your air conditioning unit suddenly failing to cool your home as well as it used to just a few weeks ago. The reduction in the refrigerant level means the heat exchange process will take forever to complete (if it ever does).

Longer Cooling Cycles

Your HVAC system will run longer cycles as it struggles to reach your desired temperatures without adequate refrigerant levels. The longer cooling cycles also lead to high energy bills.

Ice Formation on Coils or Refrigerant Lines

If there’s any sure tip on how to recognize a refrigerant leak, this is it. While there may be other explanations for some of the signs we’ll mention here, there’s no other explanation for ice formation on coils and refrigerant lines. The ice forms when there’s insufficient refrigerant to absorb heat from your indoor space.

Hissing Sounds

Hissing sounds often occur when refrigerant escapes from tiny holes in the system’s coils or lines. You’re likely to hear this noise around the indoor unit. HVAC systems with refrigerant leaks might also make a jingling noise while running.

Some Less Obvious Signs of a Refrigerant Leak

Some of the less obvious signs of a refrigerant leak include the following:

  • High indoor humidity. When the refrigerant levels drop too low, your HVAC system will struggle to dehumidify the air, making your indoor space feel warmer and more uncomfortable.
  • Strange smells. Depending on your refrigerant type, a refrigerant leak can produce a sweet chemical smell. This is especially true for leaks around the evaporator coil.
  • Oil stains. Have you noticed oil stains around the refrigerant lines or coils? This could point to a refrigerant leak.

Does Your AC Have a Refrigerant Leak?

Refrigerant is that magical liquid that makes air conditioning possible, so refrigerant leaks make your AC much less effective. If you have a refrigerant leak, it’s in your best interest to get it fixed as quickly as possible to avoid damaging your system. Below is a quick guide on refrigerant leak detection and refrigerant leak troubleshooting.

Contact Trademasters Heating & Cooling today!

What Does Refrigerant Do?

Refrigerant is a liquid in air conditioners that has some special properties that make it ideal for heating and cooling applications. Refrigerant is really good at absorbing heat and is used to extract heat from ambient air to produce the cold air the AC blows into your home.

As such, one of the main consequences of a refrigerant leak is hot or lukewarm air from your AC. Modern air conditioners use a closed refrigerant system, so you should never have to replace your refrigerant unless you have a leak.

Signs of a Refrigerant Leak

Below are some of the most common signs of refrigerant leaks we encounter on the job.

Frozen Coils

Evaporator coils use refrigerant to absorb heat and create cold air. When refrigerant levels are low, the cold can cause evaporator coils to freeze over. Frozen coils can cause leaks and the ice might damage coils, which can be expensive to repair or replace.

Hissing or Gurgling Sounds

Refrigerant systems are highly pressurized, so when a leak forms, gas and vapors escape. If the leak is large enough, you might be able to hear a hissing or gurgling sound coming from your coolant lines.

Sweet Smell

Many describe refrigerant as having a semi-sweet smell similar to nail polish remover.

Higher Electricity Bills

Air conditioners with refrigerant leaks need to work harder to achieve the same cooling, so they use more energy, causing your monthly electricity bills to spike. A refrigerant leak can add hundreds to your annual electrical bill, so you should get a leak fixed as soon as possible.

Longer Cooling Cycles

Refrigerant increases your system’s efficiency, so the less refrigerant there is, the longer your AC needs to cycle. Longer cooling cycles increase your energy bills and also put an unnecessary strain on your system, increasing the chances of breakdowns.

Are Refrigerant Leaks Dangerous?

Yes, Refrigerant leaks are dangerous and pose a health hazard. Refrigerant is toxic, and the vapor is heavier than the atmosphere, meaning it can displace air in your home. Refrigerant can cause lung and brain damage in high concentrations, so repairing leaks should be your first priority.

Fantastic Service. Joey's inspection was extremely thorough. He went through our entire system, and was able to identify everything that didn't work properly. He very clearly explained pro's and cons of the different options which helped us make a prioritized decision of what we needed done, what should be done and what we could do later. We had battled with our HVAC system every season, A/C issues in the summer and heat issues every cold snap. Other agencies would always just do the "quick" fix but not the proper job. We were tired of constantly calling people out to "fix" the problem.I was very impressed with the quality of service and knowledge base, and the fact that Joey took the time explain how the system worked, which really provided a level of confidence I never had with other HVAC agencies.Additionally, the service was extremely courteous and professional. Joey took great care not track any dirt in our home and cleaned up the job site in the attic. He was on time and showed up during the period he said he would; which was huge. Initially he responded to an HVAC emergency - We had no heat in our house and it was in the 20's at night. He was able to quickly come up with a solution to get our heat back on, until we could schedule a time and date with the right parts to complete the job the right way.If you want the job done right, a clean install and professional service look no further than Trademasters Heating and Cooling. David has been doing an amazing job as usual! Him, Joey, and there is one more guy that I feel so bad for forgetting his name, has been on point with providing stellar services, outstanding communication, and provide highly efficient materials/ product. They give you their best 1000% of the time and I am a client that is all about quality which I highly recommend this company. You will not be disappointed.

David was very nice and knowledgeable. After completing maintenance there were several recommendations which we felt were very reasonable. David came back out and got all the needed repairs done timely. The unit so far seems to be working better than it ever has. We joined the maintenance plan to keep our unit running smoothly. Highly recommend!

EDIT; Today David came to replace our A/C. Still showed the utmost respect while in our home as he did previously. Very careful to cover my carpet and flooring where they would be walking upstairs and kept us updated as he went along completing his work. As I stated last time, David was great.David at Trademasters did a great job finding the problem with our upstairs AC unit. Very efficient, friendly and explained things to us in detail. Will definitely call them if needed in the future.

This company is great! For starters they were able to schedule an appointment with me right away as oppose to being put on a waiting list not knowing when I’ll get a call back. They are very organized and the system they have in place is very efficient. Mr. David Higgins (our technician) upon arrival was able to quickly assess the situation with our unit and fix it promptly. Was able to send me an invoice right away and was able to pay over the phone with a credit card. They make it extremely easy to work with. Based on my experience with them today they have a long time customer now. Thank you guys.
